Excellencies,

I am writing to you in my capacity as the WFP Regional Director for Southern Africa to urgently seek your support in addressing the severe impacts of the current El Niño phenomenon in our region. Several countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi, have declared a State of Emergency due to the El Niño-induced drought, further exacerbating the challenges they were already facing from the COVID-19 pandemic and a cholera outbreak.

The current drought is projected to be more severe than the 2016 El Niño event, and with these countries lacking sufficient food reserves, the situation is dire. It is estimated that more than 21 million people will be affected, highlighting the urgent need for a coordinated and effective response.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is poised to support governments in their emergency response efforts by leveraging our operational capacity, assessment tools, logistics expertise, supply chain networks, delivery mechanisms, and resource mobilization and advocacy skills. Given that food needs to be imported from outside the region, your support in advocating for resources and coordinating response efforts is crucial.

WFP is working closely with the SADC Secretariat to bring together all relevant UN agencies and partners to ensure a comprehensive response. We are ready to collaborate with SADC Ambassadors in various capitals to coordinate advocacy efforts and mobilize the necessary resources for the emergency response.

Our team is committed to providing you with regular updates and information to facilitate your engagement in this critical initiative. Additionally, WFP offices in donor capitals stand ready to collaborate with you to enhance coordination and resource mobilization efforts.

Your active involvement and support in advocating for resources will make a significant difference in the lives of millions of people facing food insecurity and other challenges in the region.
